Course Description

OUTDOOR EDUCATION (SPIN)

In this course, you will apply classroom-based learning activities to an outdoor environment. You will gain an appreciation for the outdoors while participating in a range of outdoor activities. The activities will include tramping, camping, navigation, appropriate gear and cooking food outdoors. The focus will be on developing your skills in these activities as well as learning about risk management and leadership. In this course you may work towards the Duke of Edinburgh award where you can display your new skills on an overnight camp.

This will be a practical outdoor course where you will explore the following:

  • How to work effectively in a group with others

  • Leadership in the outdoors

  • Group problem solving and decision making

  • Safety and risk in the outdoors

  • Stepping outside your comfort zone

  • Outdoor skills such as: cooking, camping, navigation, map reading, survival, equipment/gear, leaving no trace, weather reading, flora & fauna.
